What is a high performance organization (HIPO)? At the beginning of the semester, not one of us could define the answer. Throughout the course of the semester we have slowly come to a realization of what it means to be and perform as a HIPO. The old corporate standard of making decisions was "If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it." In a HIPO if it works, make it work better. In order to achieve this an organization must function together on a higher level. Understanding this concept was accomplished though an open-ended task assignment without any direction. Without group members working as a team to fit together the pieces of the class "puzzle" we would never have been able to perform as a HIPO. We had to utilize a variety of resources as well as rely on each other. Each of our group members brought a variety of backgrounds and education to the team. As a result, the performance of the group as a whole exceeded individual performance.

In this paper we will summarize the methods used by our group to become a HIPO. Two of the methods involved were Locus of Control and Life Assessments (LIFO), which gave us a greater understanding of individual group members. We also enhanced these through social interactions while completing the Turnaround. The Turnaround was our introduction to storming as a group process. By the time we began performing for our final project everyone was well acquainted with each other’s personalities and group norms had been established. This paper contains a detailed analysis of individual and group process and performance.
