Our group met for a weekend session at Johns
office to discuss our task force objectives for the PBJ Case. We reviewed the case as a
group, and utilized the brainstorming technique to address the various facets of the case.
We found the brainstorming to be an effective technique that everyone was comfortable
with, and all members of the group generated new ideas for each category. For the second
portion of the case, the instructions stated the group should use the nominal technique
for discussion, but the group consensus was to continue with brainstorming as it appeared
effective and all members were participating.
The groups brainstorming session yielded the
following ideas and variations on solutions:
Identification of possible sources of production problems:
 | Peanut butter is sticking to the spoon |
 | Employees are licking the spoon |
 | Improper leveling of the spoon |
 | Air in the peanut butter in the spoon |
 | Peanut butter is not correctly measured out therefore the
spoon does not contain the full required 1 oz of peanut butter |
Solutions to address method problems:
 | Look at increasing total amount of peanut butter put into
the spoon |
 | Use a 1.5 oz spoon to compensate |
 | Randomly check the weight of the spoons after peanut butter
is added |
 | Level the spoons then check total weight after leveling |
 | Dip the spoon and spreaders in some sort of
"anti-stick" formula or coating |
 | Weigh the peanut butter slice of bread after peanut butter
is put on but before the two halves of the sandwich are put together |
Solutions to address personnel problems:
 | Random employee checks, make sure employees are not licking
the spoons |
 | Ensure people have enough time to spread the peanut butter,
possibly slow down assembly line belt to allow more time for peanut butter application |
Solutions to address material problems:
 | Warm the peanut butter before its applied |
 | Freeze the peanut butter |
 | Freeze the peanut butter and slice it into patties of
correct weight |
 | Warm the peanut butter in the spoons, use a heated spoon or
scoop |
 | Premeasured peanut butter enclosed in wax paper |
Solutions to address machinery problems:
 | Use a tube dispenser system but warm the tip where peanut
butter is applied so it will warm the peanut butter being applied and improve flow |
